Since the launch in 1985, the Group has evolved into a globally influential travel and tourism conglomerate, carrying over 10.4 million passengers and 660,000 tonnes of cargo during the financial year 2003/2004, an increase of over 26 per cent on the previous year, making Emirates the world’s fastest growing airline. Emirates developed from being a regional carrier serving just three destinations to currently operating two hundred and sixty flights per week out of Dubai; flying to over 78 destinations worldwide and to 55 countries. Renowned for its industry innovations, in 1992 Emirates became the first airline in the world to install personal video systems in all seats in all classes throughout its fleet. In 1999, with the arrival of its first Airbus A330-200s, which feature personal video cassette players in Business Class seats, Emirates became the first airline in the world to provide this facility in both Business and First Class. The Airline operates a modern fleet of aircraft with an average age of just three years and includes Boeing and Airbus aircraft. In 2003 at the Paris Air Show the Group made history in placing the biggest ever order in civil aviation by announcing confirmed orders for 21 more Airbus A380-800 and leasing orders for two A380-800s. The additional 23 aircraft will bring Emirates’ total outstanding orders for the giant double-deck jetliner to 45, the most ordered by any airline. Emirates also announced orders for more four-engined A340s, purchasing two more ultra-long-range A340-500 and 18 of the larger A340-600 Higher Gross Weight aircraft, as well as leasing two A340-600s from ILFC, the International Lease Finance Corporation. This makes Emirates the launch customer for the A340-600 HGW. The confirmed orders announced in Paris 2003, along with those revealed at the Dubai Air Show three years ago, bring Emirates’ current total order book to $26 billion. Making the Group on target to increase its fleet to 160-plus aircraft by the year 2012.
